Old people doing old things. Fireworks and something less than wonder in the night. A show. A gathering of people who brought their wonder with them and departed with plans in place, faces dropped and intent on the nextness of the night. Death or a party or the quiet nothingness of a personal reality. The quiet comfort of first world safety.

I didn't see all this when I took the picture, just people, different generations, welcoming the new year all together, with a lot of amazement and joy actually, nevertheless the dark time we are living in.

The great and uncertain future that is coming, that we might meet with hopeful or fearful expectation. The older woman, separated from the others by the darkness, adds a great deal to this shot, I think; and the man's face right above her's, as if to throw her's into comic relief. A wonderful shot, altogether.
