Could you explain me please how can I use it? Which layer mode should I use? Anyway, what is it for? I suppose it is for emulating an old analog camera, right?

Try with layer soft light or incrustation and then adjust transparency and curves for this layer.
It can indeed bring to digital file some feeling of a film photography.
